How To Create A Seamless Wifi Network
How do I set up Premium WiFi powered by Plume?
You need to have an active high-speed internet connection with Comporium, the Plume app, and pods to begin setup.
The Plume app will guide you through the easy setup process, starting with creating your account, then connecting a SuperPod to your modem or router by ethernet cable, and finally adding the rest of the Superpods to complete the setup. Please note that you need to leave the gateway pod connected to the modem via Ethernet to maintain your Premium WiFi network.
Premium WiFi Installation – App Steps
- Open the App Store or Google Play store on your mobile device
- Download and open the HomePass by Plume App.
- Launch the Plume app.
- Choose the "Setup Plume"
- Read and accept the Plume Membership and Cloud Service Agreement.
- The app will prompt you to enter your name and email. This will be for your new Premium WiFi powered by Plume account.
- Choose your account password, which must be at least 8 characters long.
- An email will be sent. Click on the "Verify Email"link to continue the setup process.
- Within the Email, select "Open Plume App".
- Once the app is open, you will need to allow Plume to use the Bluetooth on your device. Select "Ok".
- You'll be presented with the overall steps to get your first pod connected. This will become the Gateway pod of your Plume network. The info buttons will bring up additional details for each step. In these steps you will be prompted to:
- Connect a SuperPod using the supplied ethernet wire to your modem or router. If you have an existing router, ONT for Fiber or other type of network configuration, use theAdvanced setup button to get more information on how to connect the pod to the network.
- Plug SuperPod into power – stay close to this pod.
- Restart your modem. The modem should also be left unplugged from power for a minimum of 30 seconds until the next step. If you are using your existing router, modem/router combo, or ONT a restart is not necessary.
- A SuperPod should be plugged into the modem using the included Ethernet cable.
- TappingView Options followed byAdvanced Setup Options will provide additional configurations based on how your previous network was set up. (routers, modem/router combos, switches, etc.)
- The SuperPod that plugged into the modem or router using the included Ethernet cable will now be referred to as the Gateway Pod.
- The Gateway pod should now be plugged into the power outlet.
- The LED will turn solid for a moment and will begin to slowly pulse.
- If the modem was left unplugged from the previous step, it is at this point it should be plugged back into power.
- Stay close to the pod so the app can find it via Bluetooth.
- The LED will continue to slowly pulse until the pod connects to the cloud.
- Once connected, the app will guide you to input your new WiFi name (SSID) and Password.
- To simplify setup, you can use the pre-existing SSID and password. This will allow all devices to easily switch to the new WiFi network once the old one has been turned off, without needing to update credentials on every single WiFi client.*If you are a subscriber to ReadyHome security service, please be aware that installing Premium WiFi services may affect your connectivity. To avoid disruption of your service, use the same SSID and password as previously used when the ReadyHome system was installed.
- Alternatively, this could be an opportunity to setup a completely new WiFi network name and/or password. This would help ensure that the new WiFi network starts off as secure as possible.
- Once the Gateway pod connected to the cloud, the LED should now turn off.
- At the bottom of the screen, the progress on the new network configuration will be displayed.
- The app will show a series of tips on how best to position the remaining pods.
- Tips include how to avoid blocking the signal with furniture and other objects as well as how to avoid blocking the second outlet.
- If the first pod is a part of a pack, it will start looking for the other associated SuperPods now. A greyed-out image of the Pods known to be part of the pack will appear.
- Go around the house plugging in the rest of the pods.
- As each pod connects to the network and cloud, a green checkmark will appear and the LED will turn off.
- If the SuperPods are not part of a pack, the app will try to find them via Bluetooth. However, the pods will be found by the network as long as they are within range of a pod associated with the network.
- Once all SuperPods are connected, tapDone adding Pods.
- Choosing toEnable Notifications, will send a push alert to your phone in case of events on home network or security alerts triggered by Guard.
- The Plume app will prompt you to join the new WiFi network with your mobile.
- Tapping onJoin will either automatically join you to your WiFi network or take you out of the Plume app and into theWiFi – settings so you can join.
- Once back in the Plume app, aWelcome to Plume Adapt message indicates that the device is now connected, and the new WiFi network is operational.
- As an optional step, pods can be named for easier identification later.
- TappingSnooze, will skip this step.
- To name the pods, bring the device close to each pod that is to be named. Bluetooth is used to identify the closest pod.
- Choose from the list of default names or enter a custom name for each pod.
- The first optimization is the last part of the initial setup.
- The app will describe what you can expect from these optimizations over the next few weeks.
- Regular optimizations will take place overnight, and whenever needed, to ensure you have the best performance possible.
How does Premium WiFi choose what my Network Mode should be?
When the Networking Mode in the app is set to eitherRouter Only orAuto mode (default), pods look at the different characteristics of the IP they are assigned.
InRouter Onlymode, pods look at whether they are getting a different subnet or same subnet, from the modem or router upstream, to the LAN IP subnet in the app.
InAuto mode (default setting), pods see if they are receiving a Public IP or Private IP from the equipment upstream to set therealized mode to eitherBridge orRouter modes. Therefore, the network hardware used (Modem or Router) upstream to Premium WiFi is not included in the observations as it does not impact what the network mode should be.
The table below shows what the realized network mode will be depending on the app setting in three different setups:
Setup | Mode (App setting) | IP Range | Realized Network Mode | |
---|---|---|---|---|
Single Gateway pod (connected by Ethernet) | Router | Different subnet | Router | |
Same Subnet | Bridge | |||
Auto | Public IP | Router | ||
Private IP | Bridge | |||
Multiple Gateway pods | Router | Different subnet | Router (all gateways act as routers and have same LAN IP address) | |
Same Subnet | Bridge | |||
Auto | Public IP | Router (all gateways act as routers and have same LAN IP address) | ||
Private IP | Bridge | |||
1st Gateway pod | 2nd + Gateway pod(s) | |||
Daisy chained Gateway pods | Router | Different subnet | Router | Bridge |
Same Subnet | Bridge | Bridge | ||

Where should I place my pods?
When it comes to getting the best performance out of your Premium WiFi network, pod placement is everything! While every home has a unique size, shape, and WiFi environment, here are some guidelines for maximizing your speeds.
We recommend one Pod for every two rooms. Pods should be spread evenly around the home, especially in rooms and open spaces where it is more common to use WiFi. Typically, they should be placed about 30-40 feet apart through walls and 60-80 feet apart for large open spaces (like a large living room).
Be sure to position pods in central locations along the interior walls of your home to take advantage of the pods' omnidirectional radios!
Additional Tips
Turn Off Additional WiFi Networks
- Parallel networks from an upstream or additional router increase interference, dramatically decreasing your Premium WiFi's network's performance
- If your secondary network shared an SSID and Password with your Premium WiFi network, devices will often become confused and hop between the two networks, hurting their connectivity
Steer Clear of Furniture
- Dense padding and metal/wood framing in furniture can inhibit your WiFi performance. Try placing your pod in an open, exposed area to improve signal and show off your new hardware!
- Similarly to how mirrors reflect light, they also reflect WiFi signal, decreasing signal strength. Try to position pods to connect around large mirrors and windows, rather than through.
Avoid Appliances
- TVs, refrigerators, subwoofers, and metals doors are WiFi killers. Avoid placing pods too close to or behind these appliances.
- Devices like microwaves, baby monitors, and cordless phones often share the same frequency as your WiFi networks, creating additional interference when placed too close together.
Work Around Your Home's Construction
- Just like mirrors, energy efficient windows can negatively impact your WiFi signal.
- Metallic blinds/shades can also prevent your network from reaching balconies, terraces, or gardens.
- Foil backed underfloor insulation can prevent WiFi signals from passing between floors in your home. Try placing pods near stairs where they might have a more direct line of sight.
How do you recommend placing pods?
We recommend one SuperPod for every two rooms. Alternatively, you can use one SuperPod for covering larger rooms like a living room or master bedroom.
Spread pods evenly around your home, especially in rooms and open spaces where you often use WiFi. We recommend placing SuperPods towards the center of the home instead of the outside walls in order to efficiently utilize coverage of the pods to create a seamless WiFi network.
What do I do if the App is stuck during setup?
If you get stuck during the setup process, follow these steps:

- For Android device users, tap the Recent apps button and swipe the Plume app to close it.
- For iOS device users, double-click the Home button and swipe the Plume app to close it.
- Restart the Plume app and begin setup again. If you've already created and verified your account, you can sign into your account.
My app is stuck on "Still looking for internet connection to Plume pod" screen. How do I get past this?
If the "Still looking for Internet connection to Plume pod…" screen pops up, it means that the Plume App is not detecting an Internet signal on your gateway pod.
Here are the most common reasons for this issue:
- No Internet is being provided through your modem or router.
- Power cycle your modem. If you have recently rebooted your modem or router, reestablishing the Internet connection can take a while.
- If your gateway pod is connected to another router or switch, verify that it's properly setup by reviewing our recommended setup here. To confirm Internet availability, try to connect the pod directly to the modem.
- Pod is not receiving any power.
- Try to plug in the pod to another outlet. The LED should turn on.
- Bluetooth on your device is OFF.
- Be sure to turn ON Bluetooth on your device. The Bluetooth option is often found in the Settings section of your device.
- The notification will automatically disappear once it detects your gateway pod, so you can continue with your setup.

These ONTs provide DHCP through a Cat5e or Cat6 cable going in to the wan port on a residential gateway like the FiOS Quantum Gateway (FIOS-G1100) . One can simply take this cable, set Premium WiFi to Auto mode and connect the Ethernet cable coming from the ONT to the Gateway pod.
You may need to keep the provided residential gateway if it is also required for additional services like Set-top boxes (STB).
Can I plug a pod outdoors?
We recommend that you keep your pods inside and away from rain or moisture. If you want to improve WiFi coverage in your outdoor space, we suggest that you place a pod just inside your door or take it outside only when you need it for a get together.
Can I plug a pod in a bathroom?
Bathrooms are masses of WiFi deflectors because of the pipes and mirrors that lie in or on their walls. In addition, the pods are not really waterproof. We'd recommend skipping the bathroom.

- No need to delete these, this indicates that your pods are en route!
- Wait for your shipment to arrive. You should have received a tracking number via email.
- Once they've arrived, go ahead and connect them to power. You'll notice the red dots turn white as they connect to your network.
- Let the pods come online over the next couple minutes. Some pods will go through a firmware update briefly to make sure all of your favorite Premium WiFi features are available!
Can I switch the pod connected to the modem or router with another pod?
Yes, you can. Please follow these steps to switch pods correctly:
- Disconnect the original pod from the modem or router.
- Connect the replacement pod to the modem or router.
- Unplug your modem or router from power for at least 30 seconds
- Power up your modem or router.
How do I setup Premium WiFi powered by Plume while keeping my devices connected to the router?
You can easily setup Premium WiFi while keeping your devices connected as long as you have one Ethernet port on your router available to connect a pod via network cable.
If you do not have any Ethernet ports available on your router, you can use a switch to add additional ports. Replace one of your devices connected to your router with the switch. Then, connect the previously removed device and pod(s) to the switch via Ethernet cables.
Does Plume Support Using a Static IP Address?
Not currently, but hopefully in the future, this feature will be added.
In the meantime, Comporium advises you to connect the Plume to a Comporium cable modem gateway or a Comporium router (fiber-based customers). The Static IP address can be configured in the gateway or router and will support the features needed for use with a Static IP address. Should you need assistance changing settings on Comporium provided networking equipment, please contact Internet Technical Support by phone at 866-843-9444 or by webchat.
How do I turn my existing router's WiFi off?
